Mattresses - What are the standard sizes

Before shopping for a bed or looking for the perfect bedding, it is vital to know the size of your mattress. Depending on your height, number of people per bed and space available the size of your mattress will change accordingly. The smallest mattress is the Twin, also known as a single, which measures 39” x 75”. It is limiting since it can only comfortably fit one adult, but is great if you need to save space.

Full Size Mattresses, also known as a Double, are 15” wider than a Twin, measuring 54” x 75”. Though it can accommodate two people, there is only 27” of sleeping space per person. Though a Full doesn’t take up very much room, many couples think it’s too cramped for anything other than an occasional nights sleep. A Queen is 60” x 80”, offering 21" wider and 5" longer than a Twin bed and 6" wider and 5" longer than a Double. A Queen sized bed offers 30” to each person, just 9” short of each person having a Twin bed.

For full comfort and luxury, a King size mattress measures 76” x 80”, the size of two Twin mattresses. The 16” wider than a Queen is fully appreciated when sleeping more than one person and is the widest bed available in most stores. If you have the space, this mattress will make any bed an extravagant addition. A California King Size Mattress measures 72” x 84”, still 12” wider than a Queen, but 4” longer. This is the longest common mattress and is the best choice if you or your partner are tall.

Whether buying a memory foam or organic mattress, check that the manufacturer uses standard sized dimensions. Knowing which size your mattress is or which one you need helps in deciding bedroom furniture, décor or even a house!
