Would Metal Beds Work for Knights of the Roundtable?

An interesting question – it prompts us to think about what knights in those times really would sleep upon…and what they might prefer to sleep upon now. The average person will not know exactly what sort of bed types knights might sleep on. Most people simply gravitate toward wood beds because it seems to make the most sense. But what about the present? What would they think of contemporary metal beds?

There is no reason a knight – or anyone for that matter – would reject a modern metal bed. Knights practically lived in metal as it was. Think of it: their armor, their swords, embellishments on clothing, tools and horseshoes all involved metal. They understood the power and majesty of well-wrought metal, and if they saw what we could do with metal now, no doubt they would be highly impressed. Looking at the intricate headboards, light and dark finishes, and the occasional austere style, they may very well feel right at home.

Indeed, even now, most of us find ourselves impressed. We have come a long way since the times of the Knights of the Roundtable. A glance at any king size metal bed by manufacturers like Hillsdale Furniture will tell anyone as much. Some are so magnificent, in fact, that some of us even today may think the style is fit for a king or queen. We have indeed mastered metal through fire and sheer skill. Certainly any knight would feel privileged to sleep surrounded by such works of artisanship. Much of the time, so do we.
